Why change the habit of a lifetime?

When I was at school, I learnt to touch type. It was recommended to learn as a valuable skill. Something that I am now grateful of and indeed has proven unbelievably valuable.


How do you learn to touch type? It is repetitive action using your brain and your hands until it becomes a natural habit. A natural skill. You are doing it without even thinking about it. Your subconscious mind intuitively knows.


That is what habits are, something that we do repetitively that makes up our daily life. If I could achieve typing at school without looking at the keyboard just by repetitive action imagine what I could achieve with repetitive hard work and learning?


Our minds are extremely powerful, and our daily habits have a profound impact on our lives. What we do each morning sets the tone for our day. How we perform, how we interact and how we get things done. So, multiplied over a year our habits set the tone for our future.


That is how most of us learn by doing, we grow by learning from what we did not know. When you think about it everything that we achieve is done through our daily habits. From learning to drive, to riding your first bike, to setting up an online business. You do not start out knowing how to do it, you learn by action and by doing and the more you do it the better you become. That is after all how you become a master of anything.


People do not just become great at anything. They become great by learning and studying their craft. It takes years of dedication, years of practice and years of doing. Think of any footballer, master sommelier, composer, or surgeon they have a natural skill, but their daily lives are built on habits that have helped them to become great. To become a master. Yes, there are those who are naturally gifted but even they must develop and work at what they do.

When you consciously choose to see how your habits can change your life you have become self-aware. You recognize your own habits and others around you. You see that what you daily have an impact directly on you. So why would you not want to change the small habits into something great? Something that you love. Our time on this earth is limited so if you can spend time on things that do not help you grow imagine how happy you could be if you changed your habits to help you succeed. Repetitive action turns into doing which then turns into achieving.

Everything you do is a habit. How you communicate, how you listen, how you respond. How you choose to spend your time and the company you keep all become a habit, a way of life, a way of your life. No human is perfect, and we all have habits that we can change but why change the habit of a lifetime?


The biggest impact it will have, will be on you. Happiness is a habit.
